As a model, when you walk into an agency or a client meeting, the first thing that you will be asked for is your modeling portfolio. Modeling portfolios speak for the models; they are a models selling point and can help a model in creating a good impression on a potential employer.

Modeling portfolios don’t have to contain a lot of photos. Simply select your best photos to make up the portfolio. Even if you have had a lot of work experience, it is not necessary that you have photos from each of your previous jobs in your portfolio. Ensure that you at least have a few headshots and full length pictures. The whole idea of a portfolio is to show that you are versatile so you can put at least ten different photos showing different poses to prove your versatility.

Although you need to show different photos of yourself in the portfolio, this doesn’t mean that you get different photographers to do your photos. One photographer is enough. Hiring different photographers can be very costly.

Your photos don’t have to be colored; you can get nice black and white shots too for your portfolio. Remember, modeling portfolios are meant to sell the model. They should e able to show your versatility in different angles and poses, doesn’t matter whether the photos are black or white, what matters is that they are good photos.

You don’t have to include nude, semi nude or swimsuit photos in your portfolios. The agents or clients can judge your model potential from just photos of you dressed in different attires. A good headshot can speak volumes about your model potential .Nude photos may be considered very tasteless; actually, never include them in your portfolio.

Models that have agents can get help from their agents when putting together their modeling portfolios. Most agents have experience working in the fashion industry and so they are in a good position to advise you about your portfolio. However, if you don’t have an agent to guide you, carry out online searches and get tips on how to put together your portfolio. If you know other working models or anyone in the fashion industry, you can also ask them for assistance.

If you are a working model, ensure that you keep updating your modeling portfolio to reflect your current work experience. You can have a few photos from when you started out and other photos to show how you have grown as a model.

Models should always carry their modeling portfolios whenever they go for casting calls or any job interviews. If you are just staring out, you should also prepare your portfolio for when you go to meet potential agents. In addition to the portfolio, prepare attach your resume with the application. Your resume should contain your contact details in case the employer decides to call you back. Don’t leave the portfolio with the employer; show it to them and let them go through it when you are there. Some employers may ask you to talk about the photos, be brief and stay professional. Carry your portfolio when you leave but ensure that you live your resume behind with the employer.
